Questo bozzetto del passo San Gottardo, che va da Lucerna e Altdorf a Bellinzona, è stato uno dei principali percorsi sulle Alpi per i viaggiatori di J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851) giorno. Questa immagine mostra l'artista abbandonando l'accuratezza topografica e il realismo per invocare l'umore e l'atmosfera attraverso il colore e il gesto.
