Le cascate erano un soggetto popolare e spesso dipinto dall'artista. Nel 1650, Ruisdael dipinse i suoi primi paesaggi montani con lo stesso motivo. Egli stesso non era mai stato in regioni ad alta montagna o in Scandinavia. Si ritiene che abbia preso il motivo da Allaert van Everdingen, che viaggiò in Scandinavia nel 1644. I soggetti preferiti di Ruisdael sono semplici scene di bosco, simili a quelle di Everdingen e Hobbema. È particolarmente noto come pittore di alberi, e la sua resa di fogliame, in particolare di età foglia di quercia, è caratterizzata dal più grande spirito e precisione.
