Ruisdael introduce nella pittura del paesaggio ritratto del lato violento della natura, in contrasto con la calma che dominava il lavoro della generazione precedente. In una composizione tipica nel suo uso di un orizzonte basso, una barca tra le ombre nei talloni in primo piano sopra nel vento forte. Sullo sfondo altre barche a vento simili sono a malapena abbozzati. Il vero protagonista del dipinto non sono le barche a vela ma la grandezza e la forza della natura: il vento e il mare tempestoso.
