Hulsdonck nacque ad Anversa ma trascorse i suoi primi anni nel porto olandese meridionale di Middelburg, dove il pittore di fiori Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573–1621) era il suo modello. In questo ultimo lavoro Hulsdonck impiega una composizione standard di Anversa, familiare dalle immagini di Jan Breughel I e II e di Frans Snyders (da cui arrivano i tendini ritmici).
