Qui, la spazzola di Whistler è selvaggia e piena di vita. Ha usato grandi ictus per saturare la carta con lavaggi gratuiti, poi ha dettagliato il faro e le figure in gouache con un punto fine dopo che i lavaggi si erano asciugati. La tecnica si riferisce alle opere datate 1883–84, anche se Whistler probabilmente visitò la Mersey – un fiume nel nord-ovest dell'Inghilterra – nei primi anni 1870 mentre era a Speke Hall (casa dei suoi patroni Mr. e Mrs. Frederick R. Leyland) e ancora nel 1891 mentre stava appendendo una mostra alla Walker Art Gallery di Liverpool.
