Il soggetto di questo dipinto, un giovane Stephen Kelly, era di New York. E' cresciuto come medico e banchiere. Kelly sposò Julia Davis, figlia più giovane di Natchez piantatrice e avvocato George Malin Davis e sua moglie Elizabeth. Quando Davis e sua moglie tornarono a casa loro, Choctaw, dopo la fine dell'occupazione dell'Unione, Julia e Stephen Kelly risiederono a Melrose. Avevano un figlio di nome George Malin Davis Kelly. Dopo che Julia morì di tubercolosi nel 1877, George ereditò Melrose, altre tre dimore di Natchez, e migliaia di acri di terreno di piantagione. La sua famiglia visse a Melrose fino al 1975.
