James Peale ha addestrato sua figlia Anna Claypoole Peale nell'arte di dipingere ritratti in miniatura in acquerello su avorio. Ha iniziato la sua carriera aiutandolo con il suo lavoro quando la sua vista ha cominciato a fallire, ma alla fine ha perseguito il medium da solo, come era, secondo suo padre, "l'occupazione più adatta per una signora". Durante la sua vita, ha completato più di duecento miniature, tra cui i due ritratti visualizzati qui. Nel 1824, lei e sua sorella Sarah Miriam Peale furono eletti accademici all'Accademia della Pennsylvania delle Belle Arti, le prime donne così onorate.
