Felice (o Felix) Beato (1835-1907) è il fotografo più conosciuto ad aver lavorato in Giappone nel XIX secolo. Ha operato a Yokohama dal 1863 al 1877, viaggiando attraverso il Giappone per fotografare paesaggi e città, tornando al suo studio per prendere i ritratti degli americani e degli europei che vivono a Yokohama. Beato vendette anche le sue famose vedute della guerra di Crimea, Cina e India ai suoi patroni di studio. Questo ritratto di Pruyn cattura alcuni dei suoi appariti attribuibili ai conflitti diplomatici e militari che riempirono il suo tempo durante il suo soggiorno di quattro anni in Giappone.
