Dopo essersi ritirato dalla sua carriera come insegnante, J.W. Thompson trascorse gran parte degli anni '50 fotografando gli indiani del Pacifico nord-ovest. Ha scattato numerose fotografie a Celilo Falls e nelle comunità indiane vicino al fiume Columbia, registrando attività di raccolta di cibo regionale, feste di radice, danze e sfilate. Alla fine prese migliaia di scivoli da 35 mm di indiani nello Stato di Washington. Quasi 3.000 delle sue immagini degli indiani di Washington orientale sono ora nella raccolta di Maryhill Museum of Art. Un simile numero di fotografie degli indiani di Washington occidentali sono al Museum of History & Industry di Seattle.
