Il dipinto fu acquistato da Adriaan van der Hoop tra il 1822 e il 1828 come ritratto di Hugo de Groot, un'identificazione errata che fu mantenuta fino al catalogo della collezione Rijksmuseum del 1903.6 L'attribuzione ad Abraham van den Tempel che questo ritratto di lunghezza del busto portato quando era nella collezione Van der Hoop è stato correttamente cambiato in Van Ravesteyn presto su.7 Il ruff del sitter anonimo era di moda tra il 1625 e il 1635 circa. Il dipinto dovrebbe essere datato all'inizio del 1630, come era in questo periodo che la modellazione di Van Ravesteyn era al suo più morbido.
