Serie Leeuwarden: Stranieri nel servizio degli Stati-GeneraliWilliam Brog era un membro di una nobile famiglia scozzese. 43 Il suo servizio nelle Province Unite, registrato per la prima volta nel 1588, copriva un periodo di quasi 50 anni. In varie file, comandò le truppe scozzesi e a volte olandesi nella maggior parte delle battaglie significative che hanno avuto luogo durante la sua carriera. Fu ferito in numerose occasioni. Durante l'assedio di Ostenda (1601), il suo naso fu schiacciato e la sua guancia si spalancò, la cui cicatrice è visibile in questo ritratto.
