Serie Leeuwarden: Comandanti in Capo delle Forze degli Stati GeneraliUn membro di una nobile famiglia fiamminga, Joost de Zoete presto sostenne la causa Nassau. Nel 1576 comandò una compagnia di 50 arquebusier montati. Due anni dopo, nel 1578, la sconfitta olandese a Gemblours portò alla perdita di Nivelles, dove era stato governatore. Si distinse nel 1580, quando tenne la città di Bouchout contro un attacco di simpatizzanti spagnoli. Nell'anno successivo, fu fatto un maresciallo, e nel 1584 fu nominato Stadholder di Utrecht. Poco dopo fu sconfitto ad Amerongen dalle truppe spagnole sotto il comando di Juan Battista Taxis.
