Questa vita era uno dei primi dipinti acquisiti da The Met, parte dell'acquisto fondatore del 1871. Combina alcuni degli oggetti più frequenti della vita ancora olandese — una buccia di limone, il tipo di vetro conosciuto come un roemer, e ostriche, che si credeva al momento di avere proprietà afrodisiache. La scala diminutiva indica che era destinata al gabinetto di un collezionista, destinato ad essere sopraffatto da un solo spettatore.
