L'aspetto più sorprendente di questa immagine è il favoloso paesaggio sulla destra , che sembra essere stato solo parzialmente inventato . la provenienza veronese dell'opera suggerisce l'interessante teoria secondo cui fu dipinta per il convento di san girolamo al teatro romano . le caratteristiche topografiche di verona ricorrono qui , sebbene in forma alterata : il fiume , le rovine , la doppia scala tagliata nel tufo , la chiesa e il convento . Bartolomeo's l'ispirazione principale sembra derivare da una realtà che è tornato a uno stato di natura , convertendo il paesaggio urbano che conosceva in un paesaggio rustico .
