L'aspetto più suggestivo di questa immagine è il paesaggio favoloso sulla destra, che sembra essere solo parzialmente inventato. La provenienza veronese dell'opera suggerisce l'interessante teoria che fu dipinta per il convento di San Girolamo al teatro romano. Le caratteristiche topografiche di Verona ricorrono qui, anche se in forma alterata: il fiume, le rovine, la doppia scalinata tagliata nel tufo, la chiesa e il convento. L'ispirazione principale di Bartolomeo sembra nascere da una realtà che è tornato in uno stato di natura, trasformando il paesaggio urbano che conosceva in un paesaggio rustico.
