Il riferimento letterario per il soggetto raffigurato su questo primo esempio di olio fiammingo sul rame era l'Eneide dell'autore classico Virgilio. L’infernale “paesaggio caldo” è stato ispirato da dipinti eseguiti dal padre dell’artista, Jan Brueghel il Vecchio, che a sua volta aveva guardato indietro a Hieronymus Bosch.
