Il dipinto è dipinto in una tecnica puntilizzante. Il ritratto è posto a destra, rivolto allo spettatore, mentre studia un libro alla luce di una lampada al petrolio. Lei è vestita in un vestito rosa, i cosiddetti vestiti di riforma, e ha semplicemente alzato i capelli. Sul tavolo a sinistra si trova in parte la lampada a petrolio posta accanto ad un vaso di rose su un tavolo ricoperto da un tappeto fiorito. I fiori in un grande vaso sullo sfondo sono visivamente incorporati nel modello di carta da parati decorativo.
