Raffigurante una scena di Homer’s Iliade , in cui teti implora giove di intervenire nella guerra di troia , salvando la vita di suo figlio achille , questo dipinto fu scarsamente accolto dal salon di parigi . Il dipinto , alla fine 11 di 8 piedi , è una tela immensa , ed è intriso delle tradizioni dell'arte classica di cui ingres era così innamorato . Ingres ha conservato il dipinto nel suo studio fino a quando non è stato acquistato dallo stato in 1834 . quando è stato ricevuto al salon di parigi in 1811 , stranamente gli unici artisti che hanno riconosciuto il talento erano i romantici , Ingres’ odiava le nemesi artistiche .
