La poesia epica di John Milton Paradise Lost, che descrive la storia cristiana di Adamo ed Eva nel Giardino di Eden, e la caduta dell’uomo, è considerata una delle più grandi opere letterarie della lingua inglese. Ha ispirato molti artisti visivi a impegnarsi nella creazione delle immagini della poesia. La prima versione illustrata del poema è apparsa nella quarta edizione del lavoro, nel 1688, e in seguito, altri artisti, come William Blake e Salvador Dali sono stati ispirati a creare illustrazioni ispirate al lavoro. Le illustrazioni di Dore di Paradise Lost erano alcune delle sue opere successive, e anche alcune delle più famose.
