Cavé tenne i posti di alto rango di ispettore e direttore dell'amministrazione delle belle arti durante il regno di re Luigi Filippo. Ingres dipinse questo ritratto poco dopo il matrimonio di Cavé nel 1844 a Marie-Elisabeth Blavot Boulanger. Era inteso come compagno della foto della moglie di Cavé che Ingres aveva dipinto un decennio prima (43.85.3). Dopo che Ingres consultò Cavé sulle dimensioni della somiglianza di sua moglie, eseguì il ritratto trasferendo un disegno della sitter (Musée Ingres, Montauban) sulla tela.
