Si tratta di una ripetizione incompiuta, ridotta in dimensioni e molto semplificata, della celebre Grande Odalisque del 1814 (Musée du Louvre, Parigi), una concubina immaginata in un harem medio-orientale. Il dipinto era centrale alla concezione di Ingres di bellezza ideale, e la sua influenza è stata rafforzata dalla sua longevità: Ingres continuò a dipingere nudi come questo fino agli anni 1860, quando aveva addestrato centinaia di seguaci. Dipinti in tonalità di grigio — e grisaille — erano spesso fatti per stabilire variazioni di tono come una guida per incidere di stampe riproduttive nere e bianche, ma lo scopo previsto di questo lavoro rimane incerto.
