Charles Coguin era il superiore del monastero benedettino di Saint Sauveur d'Anchin, vicino a Douai, dal 1511 al 1547 e durante i suoi anni commissionò molte opere di Bellegambe. Questo ritratto, che è stato tagliato in alto e in basso, era l'ala sinistra di un trittico.
