Tentando di espandere il mercato per prodotti laccati naturali, Dunand sperimentato con una varietà di usi non ortodossi per il materiale, tra cui ritratti, gioielli e tessuti. La babysitter per questo ritratto commissionato, Juliette Schinasi, apparteneva a una famiglia di New York la cui fortuna proveniva dalla produzione di sigarette turche, e, al suo matrimonio, divenne marchese Raoul de Saint Cyr. Qui, appare incinta come una divinità bizantina, circondata da motivi geometrici e floreali resi in materiali di lusso, tra cui oro bianco. Diseguato dallo sguardo dello spettatore, Schinasi appare sconvolta nel suo regno di opulenza e moda.
