Vuillard ha condiviso vari appartamenti a Parigi con sua madre. Dopo che Madame Vuillard si ritirò dal suo lavoro di corsetto nel 1898, l'artista cessò di raffigurarla al lavoro ma la mostrò a tempo libero, leggendo il giornale, giocando con i suoi nipoti, ricevendo ospiti, o, come qui, a un pasto. Madame Vuillard rimase la musa principale del figlio fino alla sua morte nel 1928.
