Questo celebre dipinto e il suo vicino ciondolo, Il Garter, esemplifica un genere di pittura noto come tableaux de mode (dipinti della società alla moda) stabilito da de Troy. Rifiutando soggetti religiosi o mitologici, gli artisti hanno rappresentato l'ultima decorazione d'interni, abbigliamento, etichetta e costumi sociali. Qui una coppia amorosa flirta sotto un'immagine di Marte e Venere, relegata alla decorazione della parete, mentre il cane ansioso non ci suggerisce troppo sottilmente alle passioni nascoste dietro i loro delicati gesti. Nel 1720, la meticolosa ricomposizione delle curve tra cornice, sedia e divano era estremamente in voga, ma nella composizione di de Troy sottolinea anche il tema dell'unione fisica.
