Millet trattava per la prima volta questo argomento in un taglio di legno, uno dei dieci della serie Labors dei campi che furono pubblicati in un periodico popolare nel 1853. Il commerciante d'arte Martinet, nella cui galleria esponevano artisti d'avanguardia come Courbet e Manet, includeva questo dipinto in uno spettacolo nel 1860.
