Mosnier era un ritrattista favorito alla corte francese, che lavorava sia sull'avorio che sulla tela; dopo la Rivoluzione francese, guidò una vita itinerante, spostandosi prima a Londra e poi ad Amburgo e San Pietroburgo. Il costume in cui Luigi XVI è rappresentato è identico a quello indossato in una miniatura di lui attribuito Antoine Callet (1741-1823) datato 1787, anche nella collezione del Met.
