Gérôme dipinse questa scena, che raffigura l’interno della moschea del VII secolo di Amr al Cairo, dopo la sua visita in Egitto nel 1868. Le file di adoratori, che vanno dal dignitario e dai suoi assistenti al santo musulmano con la loincloth, affrontano la Mecca durante una delle cinque preghiere quotidiane. È improbabile, tuttavia, che Gérôme testimoniasse un servizio in questa particolare moschea, che era caduta in disuso entro il 1868. Piuttosto, l'immagine è probabilmente un composito di schizzi e fotografie di vari siti.
