In questa scena pastorale, Bertin impiega figure raccolte intorno ad un poeta anziano a destra inferiore, sia per animare il paesaggio che per evocare l'età d'oro dell'antichità classica. La sua visione idealizzata della natura è molto nel modo di artisti francesi attivi a Roma nel XVII secolo, in particolare Claude Lorrain. Alla fine del Settecento, dipinti come questo sono stati portati in voga dall’insegnante di Bertin, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, e serviti come pietre tombali agli allievi di Bertin, in particolare Achille-Etna Michallon e Camille Corot.
