La pittura animale era un genere distinto e ben rispettato nella Francia settecentesca, dove la caccia era un'attività centrale nella vita aristocratica. Oudry, il pittore animale più importante del secolo, ha esposto questa tela e la vicina Dog Guarding Dead Game al Salone del 1753. Mentre non erano concepiti come pendenti, i due erano appesi insieme da Ange Laurent de La Live de Jully, un importante collezionista nello sviluppo di quello che era ancora considerato un'idea novella nella Parigi del XVIII secolo: patrocinare pittori francesi contemporanei.
