Giocare alludendo al proprio ruolo dell’artista come illusionista è un tema ricorrente di trompe l’oeil (fool the eye) dipinti. Su due tavolozze Le Motte ha rappresentato macchie di vernice con vernice, mentre utilizza anche il mezzo per rappresentare una scena di due uomini che si abbracciano insieme, una volta come un dipinto all'interno della sua pittura, e di nuovo come un'incisione con linee firma di zecca. I soggetti Trompe l’oeil hanno apprezzato la popolarità in tutta l’Europa del XVIII e del Ninteenth-century. Gli attribuzione di questo dipinto hanno variato, ma la sua somiglianza con dipinti firmati e datati a Dijon e Strasburgo suggeriscono l'autore di Le Motte.
