Le prime opere di Millet furono modellate sulle pastorali settecentesche, ma nel 1840 l'influenza di Daumier lo incoraggiò a dipingere in uno stile più vigoroso e sobrio. Il suo Winnower del 1848 pose il sigillo su questa nuova direzione. Il dipinto fu esposto al Salone del 1848.
