Questo dipinto sembra essere stato ispirato dal poema di Victor Hugo del 1827 “La Douleur du pacha” (il Grief di Pasha). Nel poema, un potentato ottomano fittizio abbandona le sue responsabilità, compresi i suoi domini e i suoi sudditi, a causa della tristezza implacabile: “Che c’è di sbagliato in questo pasha, che la guerra chiama / E chi, triste e sognante, piange come una donna? La sua tigre nubiana è morta. ”
