Non tutta la pittura a plein-air è simile a schizzo in apparenza. Questo esempio potrebbe aver beneficiato dell'uso di una telecamera obscura, un dispositivo ottico che ha permesso all'artista di disegnare dettagli fini miriadi prima di applicare la vernice. Il risultato è uno studio tonale meravigliosamente deft di contre-jour (il riflesso della luce del sole piena) che è altamente atmosferica per un quadro così piccolo. Bidauld fu uno dei pochi artisti francesi a visitare Subiaco nel 1780.
