Il soggetto di questo ritratto è il nipote dell'amico di Gericault il pittore Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy. Questa tela è uno di un piccolo gruppo di disegni e dipinti (in varie collezioni) che raffigurano il otto o nove anni Alfred e la sua sorella minore, Elisabeth, con notevole autopossesso e grazia per la loro età. Alfred divenne pittore e, come Gericault, era innamorato di cavalli. Eugène Delacroix, che aveva studiato con Gericault, in seguito possedeva questo dipinto.
