McEntee studiò pittura paesaggistica con Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) e aveva stretti legami con molti degli artisti della Hudson River School. Nel 1868-69 viaggiò in Inghilterra, Francia, Italia e Belgio. Questo piccolo e portatile sketchbook contiene disegni realizzati nella Campagna Romana e nel Distretto Lago Italiano. Come in questo disegno del lago di Como, McEntee spesso diffondono le sue composizioni su entrambi i fogli del suo sketchbook aperto per registrare ampie viste panoramiche.
