McEntee rimase fedele alla tecnica lineare della Hudson River School durante la sua carriera, anche quando la pittura paesaggistica americana divenne dominata dall'espressione soggettiva di George Inness e dei suoi seguaci. Ha preferito eseguire i suoi disegni in matita con tocchi di gouache bianche per suggerire, come qui, dappled e filtrato luce del sole penetrando la copertura forestale per evidenziare i tronchi albero e alleviare le loro forme. Come la maggior parte degli artisti della Hudson River School, McEntee è stato attratto dal carattere pallido e pliant della betulla bianca, che potrebbe essere sfruttato a tale effetto raccontante in primo piano di dipinti paesaggistici Il “Dry Brook” menzionato nell’iscrizione si riferisce ad un affluente del ramo est del fiume Delaware superiore nel Catskills meridionale o ad una sezione della città di Hardenburgh, che McEntee ha visitato frequentemente dopo il 1872.
