All'età di diciassette anni, la famiglia di Torres-García emigrò a Catalunya, in Spagna dove cominciò a studiare pittura, e lavorò anche con Gaudi sulle cattedrali della Sagrada Familia e Palma di Maiorca. Nel 1904 pubblicò un articolo sulla rivista Universitat Catalana che affermava che l'arte non deve mai copiare la realtà, rivelando il suo concetto idealizzato di arte. Nel 1910 organizzò il padiglione uruguaiano alla Fiera del Mondo, e alla fine tornò nel suo paese natale.
