L'artista, nato vicino a Francoforte e addestrato a Roma, si trasferì in Inghilterra nel 1760. Patronato da Giorgio III e Regina Carlotta, nel 1768 fu nominato dal re alla neonata Accademia Reale. Questa piccola, precisamente dipinta lunghezza intera di un uomo in abito clericale è la prima opera di Zoffany ad entrare nella collezione del Museo.
