Schadow fu il più importante scultore del classicismo tedesco. Tuttavia, mentre studiava all’Akademie der Künste di Berlino e lavorava come assistente di Antoine Tassaert si confrontava con le tendenze naturalistiche del tardo barocco francese. Girl Bathing, presumibilmente il suo primo lavoro in marmo, segue questa tradizione e prende in prestito motivi da opere come Venus au bain di Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain del 1767 e Baigneuse entrant au bain di Etienne-Maurice Falconet del 1757. Il giovane artista trasmette sensibilità e intimità nella testa abbassata della ragazza, il suo gesto coy di coprire il seno e test attento della temperatura dell'acqua. Anche nelle sue opere successive, che sono orientate più fortemente alla chiarezza formale del Classicismo e all'attenzione sull'Antiquità, Schadow dimostra un tocco di umore sottile.
