La ricca città commerciale di Augsburg è stata a lungo fiera dei suoi lussuosi prodotti in oro e argento. Dal XVI secolo, ci sono stati circa cento orafi e argentieri, le cui opere sono state molto apprezzate sia nelle chiese europee che tra l'aristocrazia.
