Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781-1849) nacque nella contea di Chesterfield, Virginia, figlio del reverendo William Leigh (d. 1787) e Elizabeth Watkins (d. 1799). Frequentò il Collegio di Guglielmo e Maria, studiò legge e iniziò a praticare a Pietroburgo nel 1802. Dopo la morte di entrambi i suoi genitori, ha agito come tutore per il fratello minore William. Leigh sposò tre volte: il 24 dicembre 1802, alla cugina Mary Selden Watkins; il 30 novembre 1813, a Susan Colston; il 24 novembre 1821, a Julia Wickham (1801-1883), la figlia maggiore di John Wickham. Il loro figlio Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Jr., (1831-1863) morì nella battaglia di Gettysburg durante la guerra civile americana.
