Manchester, originariamente chiamato Manastoh e poi Rocky Ridge, si trova sulla riva sud del fiume James. Manchester fu incorporata come città nel 1769 e una città nel 1874. Aveva un porto attivo che spediva tabacco, carbone e schiavi. Manchester era anche una comunità di fresatura e produzione e hub ferroviario. Nel 1870, Manchester fu politicamente importante come capoluogo della contea di Chesterfield, ma non riuscì a crescere. Nel 1910 Manchester si consolida con la città di Richmond. Uno dei padri fondatori di Manchester fu John Murchie (1750-1831), un nativo della Scozia che immigrato in Virginia nel 1768, l'anno in cui vinse i lotti di Manchester nella lotteria di William Byrd III. Fu uno dei quattro fiduciari della città di Rocky Ridge e un trustee dell'Accademia di Manchester fondata nel 1807.
