Come il "Sunset on the Sea" di Kensett, sia questo lavoro che "Sunset Sky" probabilmente rappresentano l'alba, dal momento che tale sarebbe stato più facilmente osservabile sopra l'acqua aperta dallo studio dell'artista vicino a Darien, Connecticut, di fronte Long Island Sound a sud e l'Oceano Atlantico ad est. In effetti, questo lavoro sembra un saggio in partenza direttamente da "Sunset Sky", che a sua volta sembra direttamente registrato fenomeni aerei o, forse, semplicemente una composizione abbandonata. L'ovvio rapporto tra le due opere dà origine alla speculazione che almeno alcuni dei soggetti costieri dell'artista, in particolare quelli fatti nella privacy del suo studio isolano, si sono evoluti da effetti di luce transitoria e atmosferica catturati, poi plasmati in dipinti con l'aggiunta di terreni dall'aspetto generico che potrebbero o potrebbero non essere stati tipici di quel fronte all'acqua vicino alla sua proprietà.
