In un viaggio in Giappone con Henry Adams nel 1886, La Farge arruolò l'acquerello—il mezzo familiare dell'artista itinerante—per creare studi per illustrazioni e per dipingere fogli per la mostra. Ha eseguito questa composizione audace e monumentale dopo il suo ritorno a New York, utilizzando uno schizzo acquerello fatto durante i suoi viaggi e fotografie che lui e Adams avevano preso. Il Daibutsu, o Grande Buddha, un bronzo alto 50 piedi gettato nel 1252, è rinomato per le sue dimensioni colossali, il suo demeanore pacifico, e il suo sito insolito nell'aria aperta circondato da montagne e alberi.
