Quando La Farge dipinse fiori in olio durante il 1860, preferì catturare la loro essenza piuttosto che perseguire la precisione scientifica. I superbi acquerelli floreali che dipinse negli anni 1880 ricordano i suoi oli precedenti, ma il loro colore ricco assorbe la sua padronanza del mezzo acquerello e la loro vitalità decorativa riflette i suoi esperimenti in vetro colorato. Un critico astuto ha commentato: "I suoi fiori non hanno verità botanica, ma bruciano con amore e bellezza".
