Fondatore e leader del movimento acquerello americano alla fine degli anni 1870, La Farge utilizzò il mezzo per fare studi per illustrazioni e progetti decorativi, per registrare i suoi viaggi, e per dipingere squisiti pezzi di mostra floreale still-life. Questo foglio caratterizza quelli ancora la vita nel suo umore tranquillo, la sua manipolazione nuanced del mezzo, e le sue echi della composizione asimmetrica giapponese e piani tonali ampi. La Farge era all'avanguardia di artisti americani che apprezzavano i principi del design giapponese.
