La Farge dipinse spesso il paesaggio intorno a Newport, Rhode Island, dove mantenne una residenza dal 1859 al 1879. Uno dei suoi soggetti preferiti era la Rock di Bishop Berkeley, che termina una cresta in Paradise Hills. Questa visione della roccia apparve sotto il suo titolo attuale nel 1884 in una vendita del contenuto dello studio di La Farge.
