Jeremiah Platt (1744-1811) è stato un uomo d'affari di successo a New York, un partner con suo cognato Samuel Broome nello studio mercantile di Broome, Platt e Company. Mare, un ritrattista di New York poco conosciuto ma altamente qualificato, dipinse un ritratto inventivo e raffinato di Platt, con tanto attenzione prestata alla sedia laterale in stile Chippendale come alla sitter.
