Nel 1840/1841 i Ruskins intraprendono un tour in Francia, Italia e Svizzera. Dopo aver trascorso la maggior parte di dicembre a Roma arrivano a Napoli il 9 gennaio 1841 e rimangono fino al 25 febbraio. Nel suo diario per questo tempo Ruskin mantiene un dettagliato registro dei suoi viaggi in e intorno a Napoli e fa frequente menzione di Vesuvio. Le sue prime impressioni di Napoli sono annotate nel suo diario per il 10 febbraio
