Nel 1848 il tour della Francia settentrionale, John ed Effie Ruskin viaggiarono da Mont St Michel a Coutances, St Lô e Bayeux prima di raggiungere Caen il 22 settembre 1848, passando per Rouen per le prime due settimane di ottobre. A Caen, Ruskin attirò la chiesa di San Sauveur da una finestra in un caffè adiacente. Questo è uno dei due disegni identici: l'altro è nel Fogg Art Museum all'Università di Harvard. Per la mostra allestita a Boston da Charles Eliot Norton nel 1879, Ruskin fece una serie di copie di alcuni dei suoi migliori disegni, essendo “un po’ paura di rischiare” gli originali su un incrocio atlantico.
